Job Description


The Legislative Audit Bureau is seeking a self-motivated Data Specialist to research, acquire, and verify data. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with strong data analysis experience to support the mission of the Bureau. The position will work closely with audit team members, IT staff, and will report to the IT Team Leader.

Primary Responsibilities


  • Collaborates with audit teams to understand data needs.
  • Obtains and validates large complex sets of data from various sources. Efficiently identifies, reconciles, understands, and resolves any issues.
  • Accurately obtains requested data.
  • Utilizes critical-thinking skills in supporting functional analysis of data.
  • Applies data-mining techniques to large unstructured data sets.
  • Proactively assesses the Bureau’s needs for data and work with the appropriate audit staff to develop plans to meet those needs.
  • Considers and researches new tools and methods to accomplish audit objectives.


  • Maintains an understanding of the State’s PeopleSoft systems.
  • Provides guidance to Bureau staff who seek assistance in using analytic tools for their audit work and independently conducts analytic tool research.
  • Coaches and trains Bureau staff on the capabilities of analysis software tools and how to effectively use these tools.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Formal education in computer science or a related field or the equivalent professional experience to effectively execute the duties upon hire
  • Solid experience with data extraction, cleansing, and transformation.
  • Solid knowledge of database structures, software, statistical and data mining software.
  • Experience with transforming data to a usable format.
  • Detail oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with an enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, such as PeopleSoft
  • Experience with advanced features of software packages, such as Microsoft Excel/Access, STATA, and ACL.
