Job Description

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), Research and Innovation Center, Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) Directorate is recruiting staff with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) experience.  These new staff will be part of Advanced Computing and Artificial Intelligence (ACAI) team within CSE, and conduct research projects using AI/ML to accelerate energy technology development.

The ACAI team develops and deploys full-stack AI/ML solutions using modern technologies (e.g., TensorFlow, Pytorch, TinyML, Pandas, Spark, Hadoop, Docker, Apache Storm, ggplot) to meet the needs of a diverse stakeholder base.  It applies diverse analytical approaches to address customer challenges (e.g., data mining, statistical modeling, predictive analytics, optimization, risk analysis, data visualization).  For example, currently the ACAI team is using AI/ML to accelerate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for multi-phase flow energy device simulations. Through these efforts ACAI team is helping to accelerate energy technology development and to improve real-time decision-making during operations.

Selectees for these positions will engage and collaborate with NETL and external partner teams to advance AI/ML application development and deployment. To that end, they will use advanced computer hardware and AI/ML software tools available at NETL. They will write technical whitepapers/proposals to pitch ideas to customers and reports/papers to document their findings for the benefit of the customers and the general scientific audience. They will explain their work in presentations to customers, in project review meetings, and in internal or external technical meetings.
